Air Touch:
The Highlighting Technique You Haven't Heard Of

If you've ever looked at someone's hair and thought "how does it look that natural?" — there's a good chance you were looking at an air touch. It's one of the most technically demanding highlighting techniques in the industry, and one of the most beautiful results you can get from a color service. If you haven't heard of it yet, here's everything you need to know.

What Are Air Touch Highlights?

Air touch is a highlighting technique that uses a blow dryer — not a brush or comb — to separate hair before applying lightener. The stylist holds a section of hair and directs a stream of air through it, which blows away the finer, shorter hairs and leaves only the thicker, longer strands. Those are the ones that get highlighted.

The result is a highlight placement that mimics exactly how the sun would naturally lighten your hair — hitting the strongest, most exposed strands and leaving the finer pieces dark. It's dimensional, wispy, and almost impossible to detect as something you had done in a salon.

How It's Different from Balayage

Balayage and air touch are often confused, and both fall under the category of hand-painted color. The key difference is in how the hair is selected for lightening.

With balayage, a stylist uses their hand or a brush to paint color onto sections of hair. The selection is largely intuitive — skilled stylists can create beautiful results, but the technique is ultimately manual. With air touch, the blow dryer makes the selection for you. The physics of airflow separates the hair by weight, which means the placement is more precise, more consistent, and more predictable from section to section.

Air touch results tend to have a softer, more diffused edge than traditional balayage. There's less contrast at the root and a more gradual fade, which is exactly why it grows out so gracefully.

Who Is Air Touch For?

Air touch works well on most hair types, but it particularly shines on:

It's also an excellent technique for anyone who has experienced over-processing in the past. Because air touch is selective about which hairs get lightened, it's gentler on the overall condition of the hair than full highlight coverage.

How Long Does It Take?

Air touch is a time-intensive technique. Depending on your hair length and density, an air touch service typically takes two to four hours. The blow-drying step adds time to each section, and because the placement needs to be precise, it can't be rushed.

That said, the trade-off is that you won't need to come back as often. A well-done air touch can last four to six months before needing a refresh.

How Often Do You Need Touch-Ups?

Because air touch is designed to grow out naturally, touch-up frequency is lower than traditional highlights. Most clients come back every four to six months. Some go longer. The goal is a result that looks intentional at every stage of grow-out, which is part of what makes the technique worth the investment.
